Facts
- The number of people with diabetes has nearly quadrupled since the 1980's.
- Insulin is not a cure, it is a treatment.
- There are three different types of diabetes:
Type 1:
- The pancreas no longer produces insulin due to an immune response. Insulin is what allows the body's cells to use the sugar and carbohydrates we eat for energy.
- There is no known trigger, making it unpreventable.
- Most often diagnosed in childhood or teenage years.
- Those with Type 1 Diabetes must balance carbohydrate intake and insulin dosages to stay alive.
Type 2:
- Type 2 Diabetes is the most common form of diabetes.
- Type 2 Diabetes is often preventable.
- Activity, weight, age, diet, and genetics are important risk factors.
- The body does not respond to insulin properly, leading to elevated blood sugars.
- Is a leading cause of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, and kidney failure.
Gestational Diabetes:
- Diabetes during pregnancy.
- Approximately 50% of women who have gestational diabetes later develop type 2.
- May lead to preeclampsia or early delivery of the baby.
- Often controllable by diet and exercise.
